Brain Joura Mets360: "The New York Mets knocked out Washington Nationals starter Zack Littell after 3 2/3 innings, unloading on runs a la Ralphie Parker laying into Scut Farkus, by scoring 7 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Juan Soto went yard to cap off the beat down, with a 2-run home run that officially sent Littell to the showers."

Anthony DiComo Mets.com: "Facing embattled Washington starter Zack Littell, the Mets took an early lead when Bo Bichette sent his first pitch over the right-center-field fence for a homer. Then they broke out in the fourth, beginning when Marcus Semien hit a bases-loaded chopper to third base that Jorbit Vivas could not handle. Two runs scored, sending the Mets to the races. Carson Benge followed with a two-run single, Bichette hit a sacrifice fly and Soto -- playing through discomfort in his left forearm -- capped the rally with a two-run homer."

NY Post: "The fourth inning concluded Tuesday with a standing ovation from much of the small crowd at Citi Field, perhaps wondering if what it just witnessed was real. But this wasn’t a mirage. The Mets sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning and scored seven runs. Frustration turned to smiles. The Mets had it all together for a night."

Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: "Finally, they gave Clay Holmes some run support. The right-hander, who has been the steadiest pitcher in the rotation, blanked the Washington Nationals over six innings in an 8-0 win. For one night, the Mets looked like the team they’re supposed to be."

Mets:

  • Recorded their second shutout of the season and their first since April 4 at San Francisco...Despite being 3-6 over their last nine games, they have surrendered three or fewer runs in eight of those games...Overall, their staff has pitched to a 3.87 ERA (112 ER/260.1 IP) this season which is the sixth-best mark in the NL.

  • Earned his third win of the season after tossing 6.0 scoreless innings with six strikeouts...His six strikeouts were a season-high...He has thrown at least 5.0 innings and allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of his six starts this season... Since the start of last season he has had 23 such starts which is tied for the sixth-most in the NL over that span...This season, he has pitched to a 1.75 ERA (7 ER/36.0 IP) which is the sixth-best in the majors and the second-best in the NL among qualifiers.

Bo Bichette (1-2, HR, 2 RBI, BB, R):

  • Hit a lead off home run on the first pitch of the game to put the Mets in front 1-0...It was the first lead off home run by a Met on the first pitch of the game since Brandon Nimmo did so on June 17, 2023 vs. St. Louis.

New York Mets signed free agent Endy Chavez on April 29, 1996.

    1962

During the seven-run fourth inning at the Polo Grounds, Frank Thomas ties a major league mark by being hit twice with a pitch in one inning. Art Mahaffey and Frank Sullivan plunk the Mets outfielder in the Phillies' 8-0 loss.

    1984

On Strawberry Sunday, former World Series hero Jerry Koosman is greeted warmly by the Mets' faithful in his first start at Shea Stadium since 1978 when he faces his old team for the first time. Prior to the 6-2 victory over Philadelphia, fans are treated to strawberry sundaes provided by Carvel in honor of Darryl Strawberry, last season's National League Rookie of the Year.

    1996

John Franco becomes the first left-hander to record 300 saves, allowing just a hit and no runs in the top of the ninth inning in the Mets' 3-2 victory over Montreal at Shea Stadium. The southpaw recorded his first save exactly 12 years ago on this date wearing a Reds' uniform.

    Baseball Reference:

2013: The Marlins earn a rare victory, 4 - 3, over the Mets with a two-run rally in the bottom of the 15th inning. Ruben Tejada gives the Mets a 3 - 2 lead with an infield single off Jon Rauch in the top of the 15th, but the Fish come back on Rob Brantly's single and Nick Green's sacrifice fly against Shaun Marcum, the Mets' ninth pitcher of the night. It is the first time Miami wins back-to-back games this year, but the win is costly as the team's best hitter, Giancarlo Stanton, pulls a hamstring running out a ground ball in the 10th and is immediately placed on the disabled list.

2016 - The Mets score a team record 12 runs in the 3rd inning in defeating the Giants, 13 - 1. Yoenis Cespedes collects 6 RBIs in the frame with a two-run single off Jake Peavy and a grand slam off Mike Broadway. Steven Matz is the winner.

1996 - John Franco of the New York Mets becomes the first left-handed pitcher to reach the 300-save plateau with a scoreless 9th inning in a 3 - 2 Mets win over the Expos at Shea Stadium.
