Brian Joura Mets360: "Well, if you’re going to lose 12 in a row, you might as well find new ways to lose. The Mets had a 3-0 lead with their best pitcher on the mound but still found their way to a defeat, as they fell to the Twins, 5-3, Tuesday night at Citi Field."

James O'Connell NY Daily News: "The early-season free fall reached a new, unthinkable low on Tuesday night. After entering the game tied at 3 in the ninth, Mets closer Devin Williams allowed two runs in a disastrous final frame to fall to the Twins 5-3 and record their 12th loss in a row, their longest streak since 2002. The 31-year-old faced five batters and allowed all five to reach base."

Dan Martin NY Post: "Lindor seemingly had the Mets on their way to a different outcome, hitting a three-run homer in the bottom of the third and Nolan McLean didn’t allow a base runner until the sixth inning...Everything went downhill after the sixth, as the Mets got just one hit the rest of the way, the Twins rallied to tie the game in the seventh and went ahead in the ninth."

John Flanigan SNY.TV: "McLean absolutely cruised his way through the Twins’ lineup in the early-going, retiring the first 15 batters he faced and picking up eight strikeouts along the way over the first five innings. Matt Wallner immediately brought both the perfect game and no-hit bids to an end, though, leading off the top of the sixth with a clean single. The righty retired the next two hitters easily, but then fell behind Byron Buxton 3-1 before he lifted an up-and-away cutter for a towering two-run homer down the left-field line."

Anthony DiComo Mets.com: "Minnesota tied things on a Luke Keaschall RBI single off McLean in the seventh. Two innings later, the Twins rallied against Williams on two walks and a sacrifice bunt attempt that Mark Vientos threw to third base, allowing all three runners to reach their bases safely. The next batter, Keaschall, punched a go-ahead single into left, before Williams walked in a run to amplify the damage."

Ben Dickson Newsday: "Devin Williams entered in a 3-3 game to start the ninth but struggled with command. He did not record an out, surrendering two runs and walking three of the five batters he faced. Austin Warren relieved Williams with the bases loaded and no outs, striking out the side to keep it a two-run game and receiving “MVP” chants from those who stuck around."

David Lennon Newsday: "The Mets’ return to Citi Field this week figured to be a do-or-die homestand, with an easier schedule, the return of Juan Soto and the clock ticking on manager Carlos Mendoza. By late Tuesday night, however, after a 12th straight defeat, courtesy of a stunning 5-3 loss to the Twins, this team already is looking DOA."

Today in Mets History:

Born Today:

Transactions:

Texas Rangers claimed Darren O'Day of the New York Mets on waivers on April 22, 2009.

National Pastime.com:

1970

On the day he is presented with his Cy Young Award, Mets' fireballer Tom Seaver ties a major league record by whiffing 19 Padres, including the last ten he faces, to gain a 2-1 win at Shea Stadium. Batterymate Jerry Grote sets the major league mark with ten consecutive putouts in a game for a catcher.

2008

In a scheduling oddity, both New York big league teams play in Chicago, with the Mets playing the Cubs in a matinee, and the Yankees taking on the White Sox in an evening tilt. This unusual occurrence marks the first time in 11+ years that two teams from one city have both played as the visitors in the same city on the same date, a quirk likely necessitated due to the Pope's weekend visit to the Bronx, whose appearance included a mass at Yankee Stadium two days ago.

Baseball Reference:

1962 - The Pittsburgh Pirates win their 10th straight game, edging the New York Mets, 4 - 3, and matching the major-league record to start a season, while the Mets tie a National League record by opening 0-9.

1966 - The Braves win their first game in Atlanta by beating the Mets, 8 - 4.
