Ewing (2-5, HR, 2B, RBI, R): Led off the first inning with a home run to center field and doubled in the eighth inning...Marked his first career lead off home run...He is just the second Met in franchise history to hit a lead off home run at 21-years-old or younger (also: Gregg Jefferies, 2x 1989)...Has homered in back-to-back games for the first time in his career and has three homers over his last four games...Over his last 23 games since June 14, he has a .316/.400/.608 (25-79) slashline with six home runs, five doubles, 17 RBI, 13 runs and a 1.008 OPS.

Christian Scott (5.0 IP, 3 H, BB, 5 K): Fired 5.0 scoreless innings while recording five strikeouts in his 12th start of the season...Was the first time he completed at least 5.0 innings since June 5 at San Diego...Marked his third start scoreless start of at least 5.0 innings this season...Has allowed four or fewer runs in each of his first 21 career starts...Recorded his 100th career strikeout in the first inning at the expense of Carter Jensen.

Jared Young (0-2, RBI, R, HBP): Collected the go-ahead RBI in the eighth inning when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Brett Baty (1-4, 2 RBI, R): Plated two with a bases loaded single in the eighth inning to push the Mets' lead to 4-1...Has hit safely in a career-high-tying eight games (also: 7/18-26/25 and 5/9-18/26)...Over his hitting streak he is batting .300 (9-30) with four doubles and four RBI.

Francisco Alvarez (1-3, RBI, BB): Hit an RBI single to left field in the eighth inning...Has five hits and two RBI over his last four games.

Luis Robert: Recorded two hits and scored a run for Double-A Binghamton in his fourth rehab appearance.

Taryn Cooper Mets360: "Christian Scott tossed five scoreless innings, A.J. Ewing went 2-for-5 with a double, home run and RBI, and Brett Baty extended his hitting streak to eight games, helping the New York Mets beat the Kansas City Royals, 6-2."

SNY.TV: "Christian Scott had one of his best outings of the season by tossing five scoreless innings, lowering his season ERA to 3.17. The young right-hander needed 49 pitches to get through the first two innings scoreless, but was able to settle down for two quicker frames in the third and fourth innings (25 pitches combined)."

Anthony DiComo Mets.com: "Ewing launched Royals opener Steven Cruz’s third pitch 420 feet and over the right-center-field fence to give the Mets an early lead over the Royals in a game they eventually won, 6-2, with a five-run rally in the eighth. Not only was that blast Ewing’s seventh home run in 53 big league games, but it put him alongside Gregg Jefferies as the only Mets to hit a leadoff homer at age 21 or younger."

James O'Connell NY Daily News: "Tobias Myers tossed two innings in relief of Scott and allowed just one run before Brooks Raley tossed a shutdown eighth. Despite the run Curry allowed in garbage time up five in the ninth, It was an overall strong pitching performance at every level for the Amazin’s."

1964

Frank Thomas, pinch-hitting for Roy McMillan, strokes a two-out, two-run homer off Curt Simmons, giving the Mets a 4–3 victory over the Cardinals at Shea Stadium. The round-tripper comes in the outfielder’s first at-bat in five weeks, due to being sidelined by a glandular infection.

1969

Tom Seaver's near-perfect game, immortalized as "The Imperfect Game," is broken up when Cubs' rookie outfielder Jim Qualls, a lifetime .223 hitter who will finish his career with only 31 hits, singles into center field. The 24 year-old right-hander, who tosses a five one-hitters for the Mets, will finally get his no-no in 1978 against St. Louis pitching for the Reds. You Tube:

1972

Striking out three Red Sox batters in the second inning en route to a 16 K complete game performance against Boston, Nolan Ryan becomes the third pitcher in baseball history to have struck out the side on nine pitches twice during his career. The Angels fireballer, who first did it with the Mets in 1968, joins Lefty Grove (twice in 1938) and Sandy Koufax (1962 and 1964) as the other hurlers who have accomplished the feat.

1973

Interrupting Board Chairman M. Donald Grant's pep talk during a team meeting, Mets reliever Tug McGraw shouts out the words, "Ya Gotta Believe," which will become the rallying cry for the club, climbing out of the cellar en route to the NL pennant. Although New York beats Houston, 2-1, in 12 innings, their closer's words of encouragement will not immediately light a fire under the team, as they will continue to struggle until the middle of August.

Baseball Reference:

1970On the first anniversary of his near-perfect game, Tom Seaver hits his first major league home run off Rich Nye of the Expos. Seaver goes on to pitch a complete game three-hitter for a 7 - 1 Mets win at Shea Stadium.

1988Nolan Ryan wins his 100th game as an Astro, 6 - 3 over the Mets, and becomes the 7th pitcher in major league history to win 100 for two different clubs. Ryan won 138 games for the California Angels in the 1970s.

1998Benny AgbayaniNorfolk Tides outfielder about to be called up to the Mets, is married at home plate to his fiancee Neila before the Triple-A All-Star Game between the International and Pacific Coast Leagues. Agbayani, from Hawaii, and his bride wear Hawaiian shirts and have a receiving line of bat-toting ballplayers. The IL whips the PCL, 8 - 4.

2000: The Yankees lose to Mike Hampton and the Mets, 2 - 0. Armando Benitez closes for the Mets, while Andy Pettitte is the loser. The Yanks also lose Shane Spencer, who blows out his knee and ends his season. The game at Shea Stadium draws 54,283, the largest regular season crowd for the Mets since 1970.
